X-Flash Firmware Modification Program
For the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP)

  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi Guys,
As X-Flash has developed to accomodate different firmware versions, some of it's features may have become
confusing for the average new user. This document will attempt to explain some of the more frequent issues
that people often come to forums asking for help with. Some of these have suprisingly simple solutions.

Q: When starting X-Flash, I see a red screen saying that I have an incorrect registry version, and that I
should restore to default settings in the XMB menu.

A: Restore to default settings in the XMB menu. Go to Settings, System Settings, Restore Default Settings.

Q: I'm using firmware version 3.02 OE, and I can't use a background larger than 60x34 anymore, or select
different backgrounds for each month, why?

A: Because backgrounds are handled differently in 3.02. Background pictures 01.bmp to 12.bmp are no longer
seperate files, but rather a single consolidated file of all twelve pictures. Adjusting the size of one
of them, messes up the start address for all pictures after it. It may be possible with a future version
of X-Flash, to be able to replace the December background with a larger size background.

Q: I made a vag file to use as a Coldboot sound with X-Flash, but I get the boot. Did I convert it wrong?

A: Probably, Yes. The most common problem when people create their own Coldboot.vag files that do not work
it that they did not name the source wav file "Coldboot.wav" prior to converting it to a vag file.

Q: The PSP information screen shows me some information that I know is incorrect. Is this a bug in X-Flash?

A: Yes, and No. Some information fields were included to recieve feedback from the public to see if they are
correct, or to add various unknown definitions. Some of this might help the PSP development community.

Q: I liked using the XMB Menu Editor when I had 1.50 version firmware, and now I have upgraded my firmware,
the Menu Editor is disabled in X-Flash. Why can't it be implemented with my firmware version?

A: The later firmwares that became popular with the PSP homebrew community have the file containing their XMB
menu labels encrypted. The menu labels can not be edited while that particular file "topmenu_plugin.rco"
is encrypted. Some individuals have reported that they can find other tools to swap this file with that of
an earlier firmware version so they can manualy edit their menu labels. This would take some experience in
the use of a hex editor (a type of program used to directly edit any file content).

Q: I heard that there is a hidden game in X-Flash? How do you get to play the game?

A: Press X in the ASCII credits demo when you see the moving starfield display, and the game will be activated.
When you hit the alien (smiley face) five times in one session it is destroyed, and then the game becomes
available to select in the menu at any time. If you beat my high default score, you see a secret message.
There is a prize unlocked for 1.50 firmware users who destroy the ship for the first time.

Q: How do I flash the new topmenu_plugin.rco file that I made for 3.02 OE with the icon editor program by kgsws?

A: Go to the PSP information screen in X-Flash by selecting menu option 14, and pressing left on the D-pad once.
Then press Cross to enter the PSP Information screen, and hold left and right shoulder buttons while pressing
the Cross button. X-Flash will then copy the topmenu_plugin.rco file from the xflash/Modified directory if it
is found to be of correct size to match a compatible file for use with your firmware version.
You can see the change in size of the file displayed on the PSP Information screen once it is written to flash,
and the XMB editor will be enabled if the correct file for 3.02 OE was written.

Q: My question isn't covered here. Is there somewhere else I can look for information?

A: Yes. An online FAQ is maintained by capnfuffy here: http://xflash.pspstu...topic.php?t=150
