This guide and associated tools will let you add your own custom music to Wipeout Pure. Each of the existing 19 tracks can be replaced by anything you want. WP is the reason I got my PSP, and this takes it to the next level!

Basically, the custom soundtrack is added by unpacking one of the WP data files, replacing the existing music with your own music, then rebuilding the data file again. The tools ‘wpdump’ and ‘repack’ do the unpacking and repacking.

To use this tool, you’ll need a version of WP which runs from your Memory Stick, since you need to replace one of the game data files. Running WP from the MS has other advantages – tracks load up in under a second.
This tool is not intended to encourage piracy – you can only use this if you already have a Wipeout Pure UMD. If you use a pirated version of WP, may all your children be blessed with small penises. Even the girls.

To start, you’ll need to get ATRAC3 encoded versions of the music tracks you want.

1. Install the Sony ATRAC3 codec. This can be downloaded from http://pdc.me.uk/psp/atrac3.zip, and various other places.
2. Convert the tracks to uncompressed wav, and load into a sound editor program. I use GoldWave, but SoundForge should work. Even the Sound Recorder tool that comes with Windows should work.
3. Save the files again, specifying ATRAC3 as the compression type. There should be several different bitrates available – all of them work fine for me. Before saving, you might want to maximise the volume, so the tracks are as loud as the originals.


Now you have (up to) 19 new music tracks, they can be inserted into the game.

1. Create a new folder, and copy the ‘wpdump’ and ‘repack’ tools into it.
2. Copy the Data.wad file from the USRDIR of your WP folder on your MS to the new folder.
3. Run ‘wpdump’. The data file will be unpacked into lots of smaller files. There should be 811 of them.
4. The files are named according to type. There should be 21 .at3 files, of which 19 are the audio tracks for the game.
5. Copy your new ATRAC3 encoded files over the existing .at3 files. The filenames correspond as follows:

6. Run ‘repack’. The 811 files will be repacked into a new file called Data.wad.new. Copy this to your PSP in the USRDIR folder. Delete the original Data.wad file, and rename Data.wad.new to Data.wad.

7. Run WP and enjoy your custom soundtracks.


Notes:
There doesn’t seem to be a maximum size to the audio files. The original files are all under 3 Mb, but I’ve tried tracks up to 7Mb without any ill effects.
The old track names will still be shown in WP. This is left as an exercise for the reader.
This was developed using the US version of WP. The Japanese version should be the same, though.
